Ce 30 novembre Joséphine Baker entre au Panthéon. Elle est la première femme noire à reposer dans ce temple républicain. Monstre sacré du music-hall, Joséphine Baker est bien autre chose qu’une artiste brillant au milieu des paillettes et des plumes. C’est une grande personnalité symbolisant la liberté, la fraternité et une héroïne de la Résistance. Dès 1939, elle s’illustre dans la guerre de l’ombre. « C’est la France qui m’a fait ce que je suis, je lui garderai une reconnaissance éternelle. Je suis prête à lui donner ma vie »  confiait-elle à son compagnon d’armes Jacques Abtey. Résistante de la première heure, elle cache des résistants, sillonne les routes de l’Afrique du Nord tout en continuant des tournées où elle est adulée.
Au lendemain de la Libération, elle reçoit la médaille de la Résistance française, la Légion d’honneur et la croix de guerre.
Joséphine Baker se consacre ensuite à sa grande idée : la lutte contre le racisme. Elle adopte de nombreux enfants qui en sont victimes. Dans sa propriété des Milandes elle installe « ses enfants ». Elle accomplit enfin son rêve de fonder une grande famille multiraciale.
